Alert Mates are people the recipient knows and chooses. Each person accepts their own role before the test drive begins.

Ordinary Alert Mates

Ordinary Alert Mates are the first people contacted after a missed check-in. They may call, coordinate, or say they are unavailable. They are not professional responders.

  • They do not receive routine “everything is fine” reports.
  • They must affirmatively agree to receive alerts.
  • They can withdraw from the role.
  • They should call 911 directly if they independently believe there is an emergency.

The Backstop

Backstop is the public name for the internal primary-mate role. The Backstop is the busy family member, friend, or trusted person reserved for the end of the ordinary response sequence.

By default, the Backstop receives no routine activity or early alerts. The recipient may later approve a separate 30-day Extended Powers Mode. While active, the Backstop can temporarily manage the account, see routine activity, and receive early urgent notices. The recipient can end it at any time.

  • No routine check-in calls by default.
  • No early missed-check-in alerts by default.
  • Contact only after ordinary Alert Mate options are exhausted.
  • May act as purchaser and renewal contact.
Role boundary: A Backstop cannot be the check-in recipient in the same enrollment. Someone who wants their own check-ins completes a separate joint enrollment with their own trusted person.

Who completes setup?

The recipient and one trusted setup partner begin together. The setup partner first agrees to be an Alert Mate. They may then personally select the unchecked choice: “I will be the recipient’s Backstop and renewal contact.”

If they become Backstop, at least one additional ordinary Alert Mate must accept before activation. If they do not become Backstop, another person must accept that role and the recipient remains the purchaser and renewal contact.
